2010 Chairman of the Board
John Shaffery, Poole & Shaffery, LLP
Welcome to the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce!
This year will be a pivotal one in the life of our business community. We’ve seen our share of challenges and struggles, but because of attitude and action, I believe we’re on the cusp of something big.
Santa Clarita is a place populated by a special kind of people. People who are doers, people who see opportunity amidst difficulty, people who believe in themselves and in those around them. It is that attitude of optimism and innovation that will move us forward as we begin what will undoubtedly be another successful decade for the Santa Clarita Valley.
As the leading voice for business in the Santa Clarita Valley, the Chamber will focus on taking action in six key areas throughout 2010: membership retention, networking, broadcasting, lobbying, financial stewardship, and most importantly, economic development.
Membership Retention – It has been said that there is strength in numbers, and that is particularly true for our Chamber. To ensure its ongoing strength, we need to keep a strong membership base. We can do that best by retaining current members, ensuring they receive full value for their membership dollars, and encouraging them to take advantage of all the SCV Chamber offers.
Networking – The Chamber offers outstanding networking opportunities. Whether it’s the Good Morning SCV Breakfasts, our Business After Hours Mixers, our monthly luncheons, or our special events, there are so many different ways to connect with other members, form new relationships and eventually create valuable partnerships. Although networking is one of the strengths of our Chamber, and a primary benefit of membership, more people need to take advantage of it. That leads to our next priority for 2010.
Broadcasting – We will focus on ensuring our members are aware of the many different opportunities available to them through the Chamber. Look for enhanced communications throughout the year as we seek to continually build on our efforts to reach out to members and help them connect with the Chamber and with each other.
Lobbying – One of the most important ways we can make ourselves heard is by influencing the legislative process at all levels of government. As we have done in years past, we will work to maintain the strong relationships we have built with the elected officials who represent the Santa Clarita Valley. From the City Council to Congress, we will continue to make the voice of business heard.
Financial Stewardship – During this era of constrained resources, we must make every dollar count. Everyday our member businesses face tough decisions about expenses and think creatively about getting the most for their money. It is imperative that we as a Chamber do the same. Every spending decision will be made with an eye toward maximizing the value we can provide to our members.
Economic Development – The key to continued business success in the Santa Clarita Valley lies in the ongoing enhancement of the local economy. New businesses in the community mean new opportunities for growth, new jobs, and a diverse and dynamic business climate. The Chamber undertook a slate of ambitious economic development initiatives in2009, and we will build on that foundation and continue moving forward in 2010 by working with and supporting the newly created Santa Clarita Valley Economic Development Corporation.
It is my privilege to lead the Chamber this year, and I know we will take action and accomplish great things together!
